Outstanding. I am the custodian of a 1974 Yellow Thing named S-Oam Ban. S-Oam Ban is Tohono O'otham (Papago, from Southern Arizona) for "yellow coyote," so it must be some near kin of Rover. Called "SOB" when it fails to start, it is sort of being restored, piecemeal, while riding a tow bar behind my Motor Home "El Oso" (The Bear) or the Tahoe "Weg Ban" (Red Coyote).

Once upon a time I restored (not that she had much wrong with her) one of Rover's kin, a 1972 Thing. She was a faithful, reliable little car and I was very fond of her.

Der Kubelwagen's only vices were her gasoline heater (finding a switch to operate it was a major pain and the hardest part of the restoration) and her mechanical regulator, which was prone to sticking at irregular intervals. I kind of liked having a car that was immune to electromagnetic pulse damage, so I never bothered to replace it. Instead, I installed a pair of spring clips in the engine cmpartment and clipped a rubber mallet into them. When ever Der Kubelwagen's regulator stuck and Der Verdammnt Idiot Light came on, I'd just pull off the road, open the engine compartment, grab the mallet and whack the regulator a couple of times, then continue on my merry way.

I lost Der KubelWagen in a nasty divorce, but I hope to find another '71 or '72 to restore some day. You guys have done a beautiful job with Rover.

5/3/03 21:35 Saw yr site while goofing off in Venezuela. I have two 73�s, both in the family since new. (Older brother�s �"orange" which went to a sister, then me & the other mine "yellow" from new.) Mine went to HS, college, hunting, fishing, scuba diving, honeymoon, parades, etc. Extensive time on the beach at Galveston, all over the Texas Hill Country, etc. Currently my 4 yr old claims it as her car, but the oldest (20) made the same claim 17 yrs ago. A real treat. I am looking into purchasing my first "Thing", 1973. The plan is to make it my new hobby and keep it a stock or back to stock as possible. It will be a learning experience for both myself and my wife. Pretty much everything is stock as far as I can tell, with exception of the exhaust system and the engine has been replaced with another 1600. Overall, it is in pretty good shape.
