Wolf Packs' VW Thing
Rover's History
Rover came to us from a delightful artist, who bought her
brand new from a Volkswagen dealership in 1974. When new, she was a standard
Green Type 181. The original owner grew tired of Green, so he later painted her
a Khaki Brown using a 4" wide paint brush and flat, latex house paint.
All of her original equipment was included and basically intact, and
no major alterations had been made. Internally, she had been well cared for, so
we could hardly resist her as a candidate for restoration.
We became her second owners in November, 1996. Since we had owned two
Things before Rover, we knew what to expect from
our Restoration Project.
Rover's Adventures
Aside from providing daily transportation, Rover has been on
some interesting adventures since she came to us. She has been in a Parade, lead other Things on a Scenic
Drive, went for a Boat Ride, cruised through a giant Redwood Tree, wet her tires in a River,
crossed the Golden Gate Bridge, circumnavigated Crater Lake, sunbathed by a lake with No Doors, enjoyed Snow Skiing,
crossed a Covered Bridge, and been attacked by a
prehistoric Monster.
During the summer of 1997, Rover took a marathon trip to California, Mexico, Washington, and Canada!
She also visited the San Diego Zoo, where she felt right
at home.
While in Washington, Rover Camped on a
soccer field, admired Art, climbed a Volcano, went for a Hike, and
attended the '97 and '98 Volkfest Kubeltreffen America Northwest (hosted by Things West) where she won several
awards and got to socialize with nearly 30 others of her kind.
Recently All of her chrome was powder coated matte black,
and her top frame was beautifully retrofitted by the the Thing Shop in Arizona. We then presented
her with a brand new convertible top. She's one happy vehicle!
